How Will Renewable Energy Affect the Construction Industry?

  • Rhiannon Garber
  • September 21, 2022
renewable energy

Green systems and technology have helped the construction industry utilize renewable energy, green technology, and eco-friendly materials. Implementing these sustainable practices has shifted the way construction is moving forward. Though the construction industry’s dependency on fossil fuels is detrimental to our environment, experts have weighed in and are working to reverse these statistics and drive this industry to a fully functioning renewable energy sector.

Greener Construction

Green technology has become increasingly important in the construction industry as the world’s supply of non-renewable energy sources grow scarce. Energy use, water use, indoor environmental quality, and material selection are all factors taken into consideration when constructing sustainable buildings. As this industry rapidly advances, businesses are quickly implementing green technologies, sustainable machinery, and have begun using biodegradable materials in construction to eliminate excess waste when tearing down structures.

Utilized Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is a type of energy that is not depleted when used and is often referred to as clean, green, or sustainable energy. By 2050, environmental scientists predict that the United States will be entirely dependent on renewable energy. When building new structures, architects have begun implementing renewable energy in their design builds such as solar panels, smart windows, and energy efficient HVAC systems and water heaters. The purpose of utilizing renewable energy is to ensure that eventually; each stage of the projects going forward integrate seamlessly with the next, ultimately minimizing the amount of waste and redundant materials. When structures follow this model, it can be restorative, produce low waste, and recycle or store energy, ultimately reducing CO2 emissions.

Reduced CO2 Emissions

Construction equipment counts for roughly 6 billion gallons of nonrenewable fuels each year, resulting in large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the change in the atmosphere. The construction industry relies heavily on fossil fuels to get their work done, making them one of the most environmentally damaging sectors in the world. Since 2020, and the quick advancement of technology, the construction industry has made a significant effort to provide locations with renewable energy equipment and resources to reduce CO2 emissions and move toward a greener future.
